Room and Narrative

Chosen Painting : A couple with a parrot by Pieter De Hooch

Description of the painting:

The painting is called " A couple with a parrot" which is painted by Dutch Painter Peiter De Hooch in 1668. It shows a woman and a man and a parrot in the cage which is put on the table in front of them. The woman is playing with a glass of wine, enticing the parrot from its cage while a man is standing by her side, holding the cage's door and watching her moves. The woman is looking down, giving an expression that she's not totally engaging with the man. However, the man is trying to get the attention from her by following her moves. Even though the title of the painting illustrated them as a couple, they don't seem to be a close one. Probably, it's showing the way they were back in that time when women were demure and proud when they got under the power of men. Or they were influenced by the high reputation of the men. It can be also noted that there is cold relationship between them because of the limited privacy they're having.

Narrative: "A woman is caught under the control of a man"

Design Description:

My idea is to create a private space for a couple to meet up and express their feelings to one another. I feel the space inside the painting as quiet, cold and cosy atmosphere. Therefore, i put a limitation in putting the access of light. I don't want the space i created to get much light so, i put only one window and an opening in the ceiling to let the space to get a flow of dim light.
The shape of my building is representing "man" and "woman". As the painting is showing the relationship between a couple, i would like to represent the meaning where a woman is put under the control of a man. I'm using curves in order to represent 'woman' and "strong columns' to represent man and that columns are covering over the curves. Besides, it's also showing the figure of a bird cage where a parrot is about to escape from the cage in the painting in order to show the meaning of the lose of virginity of the woman. This is also from which i get the idea for my space. I want to show the deep meaning of "controlling" and "escaping" in my design because they are the main point of the painting.

Site:

The site i'm choosing is the open grass land in Europe as it has temperate climate zone and the weather won't be too harsh. My building sits on the edge cliff which is also covered in grass. The reason i'm choosing grass land is that its openness will emphasise my building which is enclosed and trapped. Moreover, the couple can escape from the enclosed space with limitation light and can enjoy the openness of the beautiful scenery.

Final Model of Can Feliz

-The section is cut in the middle in order to show the different level of the villa. As the villa sits on the slope, Utzon played with the different level in each space of the villa. Moreover, the section we choose shows the most significant relationship between the interior and exterior as the main courtyard is in the center of the villa and semi open living space is next to it.
